Calyssa Huff, BS
Undergraduate Institution: New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
Research mentor: Jessica Tucker, PhD (Microbiology and Immunology)
Research topic: Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) causes a number of human cancers. I am studying how the host protein angiogenin blocks replication of KSHV in order to exploit this functionality for new antiviral therapies and cancer preventatives.
Background: I was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico but was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I attended New Mexico Tech, only two hours away and graduated with high honors with a Bachelor's of Science in Biology. I have always had an interest in biology but it was not until I had an enthusiastic high school science teacher that I truly decided to pursue a career in the sciences. My first visit to Iowa was through an REU program (Research Experience for Undergraduates). The REU was a life altering experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in research. It helped me fill in the gaps in my science knowledge and grow as an independent scientist.
One of the experiences in my life that has shaped me as a scientist and as a person is attending a small research school. New Mexico Tech has less than 2,000 students total but the research and academics are phenomenal. In 2023, I was selected to be a Macey scholar. This designation is for students that go above and beyond academically, personally, and in contributing to the community. I was one of 4 students who got this award and one of two that was an undergraduate. In addition, I was able to join a research lab as an undergraduate that has allowed me to do an internship at Goddard Space Flight Center. My undergraduate lab was also able to set up a small conference where I was able to present my research. Helping the older members in my lab set up the conference was a very rewarding experience. It all came together very nicely, and I was proud of the work we had accomplished. Between the REU and my undergraduate lab, I have been able to give 4 oral presentations and 5 poster presentations at conferences and seminars alike.

In addition to research, I have volunteered at school hosted events like science Olympiad and community cleanup. I am an avid reader and recently learned to crochet. In the future, I want to earn a PhD in microbiology. I would like to one day run my own research lab where I can help the new generation of scientists find their passions.
